Tips for Getting Your First Gig in the Entertainment Industry
Working in the entertainment industry can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Whether you want to act, write, or direct, the thought of having your name attached to a great project can be quite exciting. While the rewards are great, it takes a lot of hard work to reach success. If you want to get into the entertainment industry, here are a few tips to help you get started for Getting Your First Gig.
Visit Workshops
Even if you went to film school, there’s always more you can learn. Visiting workshops provides you with the opportunity to get better. If your dream is to become an actor, you can take progressively more difficult classes to help improve your skills. If you’re interested in shooting films, you can learn about the latest camera technology used in Hollywood. You can also use workshops as an opportunity to learn new skills and become more versatile.
Hone Your Skills
No matter if you want to be a producer like Heather Parry, a director like Steven Spielberg, an actor, or a writer, it’s essential that you perfect your craft. Study the skills required for your desired position. If you don’t have the necessary skills, take the opportunity to learn them. The better you are, the better your chances of getting a job.
Build Your Portfolio
With so many people trying to get into the entertainment industry, you need to have a portfolio. Anyone can say they can do something. Your portfolio provides proof. If you want to act, have clips of your work. And if you want to direct, shoot a demo reel. If you want to write, write a spec script. When you can show that you’re as good as you say you are, potential employers are more likely to sit up and take notice.
Take Opportunities as They Come
Getting into the entertainment industry generally means that you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. Look for (and take) opportunities as they come. They might not be the glamorous positions that you’re dreaming about, but you have to get your start somewhere. Check online for internships or get a job as an assistant. Most of what you do may be grunt work, but it will give you a close up look at how the industry works. Answer casting calls or calls for extras. Any opportunities you take can help to give you more of an edge.
Be Confident
If you want to get into the entertainment industry, you have to show confidence. You can’t be timid but you also can’t be arrogant. Both will keep you from getting the positions you want. You need to prove that you have what it takes to survive in a tough industry without coming across as a know-it-all.
Getting into the entertainment industry isn’t always easy. You might not get callbacks or your beloved script might get rejected. These things can be discouraging but don’t quit. Keep working hard and putting yourself back out there. Eventually, your persistence can pay off and you will be Getting Your First Gig
