The cast of Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” is quite amazing. The film stars Golden Globe® nominee David Oyelowo, Oscar® winner and Tony® nominee Lupita Nyong’o and newcomer Madina Nalwanga. But what is the story of the real people of Queen of Katwe?
The Real People of Queen of Katwe
Phiona Mutesi is the real life a young, brave girl from the streets of Kampala, Uganda. When the “Queen of Katwe” is introduced to the game of chess by soccer coach and former missionary Robert Katende, the story tells of the support she receives from her family and community as she pursues her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
Phiona’s story is truly compelling and heartwarming as you feel the emotions of the human spirit. The story begins when she started with Robert’s chess program in a makeshift Agape Church in Katwe and is now applying to college and hopes to become a doctor or lawyer.
Robert still has his chess classes and it’s fun to see the mirror of the movie and real-life. It makes the movie that much more interesting to watch.
I love Disney’s inspirational true stories, and this is one I am looking forward to sharing more as I head off to the premiere of the film in a few weeks. More details to come soon! In the meantime, enjoy this special look at The Queen of Katwe.
