Earlier this year I was in San Francisco for an event and several of my friends and I went to an Escape Room. Before that experience I had never heard about escape rooms before but quickly saw why they are popping up in cities all over the country. Living in the Orlando area had me coming home and looking for one to do with my family and friends, and lucky for us, I was given the opportunity to check out The Great Escape Room right in Downtown Orlando.
The Great Escape Room Orlando
The Great Escape Room is a real-life room escape game based on the popular computer and mobile phone escape games. Escape games are the newest craze sweeping the nation – a fun, team-building, brain-busting experience! After entering a room with your team, the door is locked behind you. 60 minutes are on the clock! You must work together in order to find clues and solve puzzles that will lead you to your escape. It is part scavenger hunt and part puzzle game. Only about 20% of groups are able to meet the challenge and escape in time!
We were a group of 6. Donnie, myself, and both of our teenage girls brought a friend. It was a perfect size group for everyone’s first time.
After arriving we we walked into a pretty decent size room and were given instructions on how the game works. The 6 of us are basically locked in a room and have to solve a series of different kinds of puzzles to find clues to escape the room within an hour. There was an employee in the room with us that was allowed to help us with 3 clues, but only after we found the hidden magnifying glasses that worked as a pass for a clue.
We did use all 3 clues and we were soooo close, but time was up as we were finishing up the last clue. It’s fun to see everyone’s strengths in the situation for it provides great team building skills. I am not strong in math, but seem to do well in puzzle solving. Donnie is awesome at finding hidden clues and we all worked well together in putting the clues up on a white board and figuring out the puzzles to get us to the next clue to eventually help us escape the room.
The Great Escape Room is safe for all ages, yet the clues are tough, so I would recommend it for ages 10 and up. We all truly had a great time and look forward to going back and trying out the other rooms. Located at 23 1/2 South Magnolia Avenue in downtown Orlando, it’s a great spot for locals and vacationers the same.
