Usually when on the set of a TV show that is shooting, we are lucky to get to just be there to observe rehearsals and/or the taping of some of the scenes. The day we visited Baby Daddy, the cast was busy, shooting scenes and trying to wrap up before the holiday break. We were very lucky to be able to sit down with the entire cast including, Jean-Luc Bilodeau (Ben Wheeler), Tahj Mowry (Tucker Dobbs), Derek Theler, (Danny Wheeler), Chelsea Kane (Riley Perrin) and Melissa Peterman (Bonnie Wheeler) in-between observing and taking a tour of the set! We even had a chance to meet Eddie Cibrian who was guest starring on the episode being shot that day.
About the show –
Baby Daddy is a half-hour comedy that follows Ben, a young man in his early 20s living the life of a bachelor in New York City with his buddy, Tucker, and his brother, Danny. Their lives are turned upside down when they come home one day to find a baby girl left on the doorstep by an ex-girlfriend of Ben’s. After much deliberation, Ben decides to raise the baby with the help of his friends and his protective and sometimes over-bearing mother, Bonnie, and his close female friend, Riley.
The Cast of Baby Daddy
I mentioned in my set visit post that the feel of the Baby Daddy cast is that they are really connected. They are truly having a blast and are really friends, spending much of their down time together. Melissa Peterman shared with us that she feels pretty much like the mom on the set. Playing the mother of Ben and Danny Wheeler, she is simply hilarious. The shenanigans with Bonnie and Tucker are ones that she enjoys shooting, but it’s the messages of the heart that seem to be her favorite to play. “I love that the show is really funny, but there is a message. I don’t get to be serious often, so when I do, it’s always a great scene for me to play.”
Jean-Luc, shared his enthusiasm of working with the twins. “Did you get to see us shooting with the babies today? They are so awesome! This is the third set of twins we’ve had since we started the show. One has a moment or a dirty diaper, the other comes into the scene.”
Tahj has been in the business for a long time. Still maintaining that baby face, he talked about his co-stars and how working with this group is truly special. “We hang out all the time. Bonnie and I live like 5 minutes from each other. Derek, Jean-Luc and I will go out. We are really friends so it’s great!” He was however looking forward to the holidays. “It’s rare that my mom has all of us under one roof, so Christmas is really great for my family.”
Derek is the one you see most often with his shirt off. Sharing that has a degree in pre-med, but decided to give acting a try after some modeling opportunities came about, “I wanted to be a doctor, but I really wanted to give this a try.” In the winter season premiere, he’s in the shower, so is Jean- Luc, with Chelsea – tough job, I don’t know who has it worse. Ha!
Chelsea is as adorable in personality as she looks. She lights up the room with her smile, and she is so sweet and grateful for being on the show.
She is pretty much one of the guys like her character on the show. She grew up in Arizona and started acting at a young age before landing a starring role as both an actress and musical performer in the Bratz movie in 2007.
Eddie didn’t do much talking, and that was OK. Guest starring on the episode we were watching being shot, it was a treat to just say hello, take a photo and ask that he tell LeAnn hello. Ok, not really the LeAnn part, but he has aged well, perfect smile lines and a little grey showing…playing Riley’s now boss, I am hoping he sticks around for more than one show.
About the winter premiere that airs Wednesday, January 14 at 8:30pm/7:30c on ABC Family.
In “She Loves Me, She Loves Me Note,” even though Ben and Riley are officially back together, Ben can’t shake the feeling that there’s something going on between Riley and Danny. Tucker is shocked when Riley confesses that she knows how Danny feels about her. In a somewhat flawed plan, Ben decides to test Riley’s feelings for his brother, so he writes Danny a love note and signs her name. When she realizes what he’s done, a furious Riley tracks Ben down in the Rangers’ locker room. Will she be able to convince Ben that he’s really the one she wants, or is he right to wonder if there’s something more between his girlfriend and her best friend? Meanwhile, as Danny gets ready to join Georgie in Paris, Bonnie realizes her cash cow is leaving and starts selling his Rangers memorabilia.
