I have been talking about The Great Courses Plus for a little bit now. I seem to have fallen in love with learning all over again. With over 8,000 online video lectures, I can not stress enough how great this site is for Homeschooling. I haven’t found a subject yet that isn’t there. As a matter of fact, there are some courses that when I am looking for one topic, I end up finding something else to add to my must watch list. When you homeschool with The Great Courses Plus, you find ways to inspire and get kids excited about learning from different instructors, from some of the most prestigious colleges and institutions in the world.
What is The Great Courses Plus?
The Great Courses Plus is a subscription video on demand service that features unlimited access to nearly 8,000 videos from The Great Courses Plus. Featuring brilliant, award-winning professors from the Ivy League and experts from National Geographic, the Smithsonian, and The Mayo Clinic and National Geographic to name a few, TheGreatCoursesPlus.com service is one you do not want to miss out on!
Homeschooling with The Great Courses Plus
I have several friends that homeschool. I admire their patience and integrity to not only educate their own children, I mean, that isn’t easy, but also that they are constantly looking unique ways to excite them about learning. The Great Courses Plus is an amazing tool that can utilize to give their kids top-notch experts talking about the very subjects they are learning.
English Courses
Let’s start with English Grammar Boot Camp. In the first video, they examine how we judge what is acceptable or unacceptable in English, and how we distinguish “acceptable” from “stylistically preferable.” Consider how grammar often takes on larger meanings related to education and culture. It gives you a little of the “why” things are as they are in the English language. With all courses, I find that the first video in a series will quickly help you see if this is the course you are looking for in your curriculum.
Math Courses
I am good at math, but I dislike it greatly. I know if I had The Great Courses Plus when I was in school, I would have liked it so much more. There are so many lectures that you can find on the site that whether you are teaching basic or college level, you will find what you are looking for in their video catalog.
This is a video I wish I used when teaching my girls multiplication. See how helpful this online too can be?
Science Courses
Science is very broad, and in this example video, The Science of Mindfulness, you learn that a surprising number of such difficulties stem from an inherited propensity of the human brain—our automatic, hardwired tendency to seek pleasure and to anticipate and avoid pain. Modern science demonstrates that this mental hardwiring, traceable to the survival needs of our earliest ancestors, is at the root of many of the psychological and behavioral problems that we face today.
Gardening Courses
Whether you are homeschooling or not, this is a group of courses that I love. I do a little gardening, mostly herbs, green onion and some peppers. I see lots of photos online of my homeschooling friends that have gardening part of their curriculum. What I love about these videos is that you learn the step-by-step process for creating a garden. The videos guide you through the process of weeding old garden spaces, testing your soil and evaluating growing conditions.
